2016-17 Historical Writing Contest for Mesa students

The Mesa Historic Preservation Board is sponsoring a Historical Writing Contest for all fourth-grade, fifth-grade and sixth-grade students living in the city of Mesa regardless of whether the school is public, private, charter or home. It will provide students the opportunity to learn more about Mesa’s history and practice their writing skills as they create either a fictional story around a historic event in the city or an oral history of someone who is interviewed. The contest is open until Nov. 18.

“The historical writing contest is a fun, creative and challenging opportunity for students to find out more about Mesa’s history and help gain a greater appreciation of our city’s cultural heritage,” said John Wesley, planning director and actinghistoric preservation officer.

This year, students may choose from one of three topics: a fictional story about the history of railroads in Mesa, a holiday celebration in Mesa between 1890 and 1950 or a written oral history of Mesa from a senior citizen who grew up in Mesa.

Each essay must reflect the student’s own research, writing and original thinking. The essay will be a maximum of 750 words in length and may be typed or neatly written.  Copies can be sent to: John Wesley, Acting Historic Preservation Officer, City of Mesa, P.O. Box 1466, Mesa, AZ  85211-1466.

Essays must be postmarked on or before the contest deadline of Nov. 18. Essays will not be returned to the author as they become property of the Mesa Historic Preservation Board. They can also be sent by email to john.wesley@mesaaz.gov.

Every contestant will receive a certificate of participation. There will be cash awards given to the first ($50), second ($30) and third ($20) place contest winners.
