Five Mesa students are featured in the 12th Annual Valley Metro Cool Transit STUFF third-grade art contest calendar. The winners were announced Dec. 8 in their classrooms with a special pizza party.
Third-graders across the Valley were asked to design artwork showcasing this year’s contest theme, “Valley Metro: Hop Aboard and Let’s Explore!”
More than 580 students entered the contest. The goal was to generate excitement about public transportation and highlight how transit helps to improve air quality, said Corinne Holliday, public information specialist for Valley Metro.
The winning artwork will be displayed in a 2017 calendar that is distributed to Valley transportation leaders and the public. All winning artwork can be viewed at: 2017 calendar.
The big winner was Mesa’s Summer Fairbanks, who attends Zaharis Elementary School. She won Best of Show and her artwork will be the cover of the 2017 calendar.
Fairbanks submitted her entry with a piece of cardboard in a manila envelope stamped “DO NOT BEND.” When asked why she sent it that way, Fairbanks simply said: “I didn’t want it to get ruined.”
The third-grader said it took her a couple of days to create the artwork and that she went with a bunny theme “because ‘hop aboard’” made sense to her.
“I was really happy and excited (about winning),” Fairbanks added.
