Brophy has proved its place on the 6A boys basketball landscape all year.
The Broncos sit at the top of the latest 6A coaches poll, grabbing seven of the 12 first-place votes, and have five more games to pull off a rare feet.
Brophy (19-1) is undefeated against Arizona opponents with its only loss on the year coming against Federal Way of Washington on Dec. 30, but haven’t had many close games in state.
And when the Broncos did – like one-point win over Mountain Pointe to start the year, the three-point win over Basha, the defending state champions, or the two overtime win over Chandler – they did just enough to get by.
Three straight road games – Central, Chandler, Hamilton – are next on the schedule with Pinnacle and St. Mary’s to close it out.
In the big picture it matters not.
Brophy will likely be in line for top four seed regardless of how the Broncos finish and will be considered one of the contenders, but should they win out then it will go down as one of the best regular seasons in Arizona in recent years.
“They just keep finding away,” one coach said. “They are winning big a lot, and when they are in a fight they are making the right plays down the stretch.”
Locally, Mesa continues to be the top team at No. 5 while Red Mountain was at No. 7 before losing to Mountain View, which dropped out of the top 10, on Tuesday.
