6A Girls Hoops Coaches Poll: Defense puts Millennium at the top

Defense could very well be the difference maker in February in 6A state basketball. (Skyline athletics Twitter account)

Millennium has withstood the rigors of the regular season to get selected as the final No. 1 teams in the 6A Conference Girls Basketball Coaches Poll.

It’s one thing to win games in December.

Come February things are much different, and expectations can mount to the point where it changes a team’s ability to play free and easy.

Millennium and No. 2 Valley Vista have what it takes even on nights when things don’t go smoothly.

“As we get to tournament time, defense is essential,” one coach said. “Millennium and Valley Vista each play the style of defense that can win a game on an off-night.”

At this time of the year, it can make all the difference and the rest of the top five – Gilbert, Desert Mountain and Xavier – have shown the ability to get big stops as well.

Red Mountain continues to be the only team on the 6A coaches’ radar as the Mountain Lions finished in ninth-place in the final poll.
