For the last two seasons the Perry girls soccer program looked to be on its way to becoming the first team from the school to win a state title.
As the No. 2 seed in 2015-16 season, the Pumas lost in the quarterfinals to Desert Mountain. Then last year, the Pumas had one of the nation’s top scoring teams and made it to the semifinals as the sixth seed but fell to eventual champion Xavier.
The way it looks right now Perry is ready to make the final step.
The Pumas have won their first 11 matches and outscored opponents 73-4 to move into the top spot in 6A this season.
The coaches have put Perry at No. 1 in all three polls so far in nearly unanimous voting as the Pumas were No. 1 in 14 submissions and second in the other two ballots.
“It’s not even close,” one coach said.
It’s a long way before determining if the Perry can finally bring home a team state title for the school.
Locally, Desert Ridge moved in the poll at No. 10 after beating Red Mountain, which dropped out of the poll.
