This week, Mesa-area tennis players 55 years and over have been playing in the 10th annual Roy Wise Monte Vista Team Tournament at Monte Vista Village Resort in Mesa.
While tennis is usually considered an individual sport, this tournament focuses on a team effort. This year, 32 teams consisting of four men and four women from 16 local communities are facing off in regular and mixed doubles matches through March 31. At the end of round robin play the first four days, the top teams will compete for the championship title.
“It’s a fun tournament for both the players and the volunteers (many of whom are playing in the tournament) – it’s a chance to be among and play with friends before the summer, to have some friendly competition, and, for those who play well, bragging rights and a medal,” said Brooke Phemister, new team tournament director. “Most of all it’s the chance to get in some exercise, to enjoy the weather and the camaraderie of your teammates and opponents.”
This year’s competition honors tournament director Roy Wise, who created the tournament in 2007. After 10 years, this will be Wise’s final tournament as he passes the torch to Phemister, who is heading up this year’s tournament and taking over planning next year’s event. To celebrate Wise’s dedication and efforts, this year the Monte Vista’s activities board renamed the competition the Roy Wise Monte Vista Team Tournament, making this year’s festivities even more special.
