The tournaments over break allowed some coaches to tinker with their lineups and rotations a little bit with no power points on the line.
They did some tinkering with the latest edition of the 6A Boys Basketball Coaches Poll, too, but not a whole lot.
The top four teams have been bouncing back forth all year and this time around Mountain Pointe moves to No. 1 from the No. 4 spot after beating No. 6 Mesa by one point in the McClintock finals.
Pinnacle and Brophy stayed second and third, while former No. 1 Desert Vista dropped to fourth.
The next three spots stayed the same as Hamilton, Mesa and Red Mountain continue to be well respected, while Perry and Cesar Chavez make an appearance after good showings over the break.
Chavez broke into the top 10 in the final spot as the Champions “have their guys back and playing well.”
The Pumas are just 8-10 but are making strides in Sam Duane’s second year: “I think they’re going to be a handful down the stretch. They got (Kyle) Patterson eligible, and Jalen Williams is playing at an extremely high level.”
Locally, Mesa and Red Mountain had good enough showings over the break to remain ranked while Mountain View fell out and just missed snagging the 10th spot.
One coach applauded the work being done by Mesa coach Shane Burcar: “Solid, extremely well-coached, and they have one of the best PGs in the state in (Mark) Hatch.”
Another said Red Mountain’s record at VisitMesa.com Basketball Challenge was misleading: “They went 2-2 at the VisitMesa.com Basketball Challenge, but their losses were to Perry (one of the hottest teams right now in 6A) and Sunnyslope, a 5A favorite.”
