The Sixth Annual Mesa Public Schools SciTech EXPO, with the theme Engaged Citizens Improve Communities, will be this Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Westwood High School, 945 W. Rio Salado Parkway.
It will showcase STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) projects and activities with a focus on civic engagement and community. Demonstrations include robotics, air and space simulations, science experiments, art, biotechnology, Mesa Public School District science fair projects – and much more.
This is a free event, with many hands-on activities, that is fun for the whole family. There will also be food trucks and vendors showcasing their products.
Several city of Mesa departments will be at the EXPO with demonstrations.
Information Technology will showcase several technologies that can be used for citizen engagement and are great for teaching introductory computing skills.
- Computer programming: Scratch – a programming interface designed especially for kids to create and share programs in an interactive online community.
- Internet of Things (IoT) devices: Raspberry Pi – credit card-sized computers that can be used to programmatically interact with the surrounding environment. A Raspberry Pi equipped with moisture sensors can be used to tell when it’s time to water your plants.
- Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that interpret facial expressions to predict sentiment. Using a Raspberry Pi equipped with a camera and Google Cloud computing analyze images for determining an individual’s mood from facial expression.
The Environmental Management and Sustainability Department will be featuring an interactive recycling game where students will have to determine which items are accepted in Mesa’s blue recycle barrel and which are not accepted. Students will also have the chance to learn about the recycling process and the importance of recycling properly.
The Transportation Department is bringing its pavement management team and their ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) team with hands-on demonstrations.
The i.d.e.a. Museum will have fun and creative STEAM activities.
