Coaches hoops poll: Top 5 match initial 6A AIA boys rankings

The third installment of the boys basketball coaches poll remained pretty much the same as last week.

One difference.

There is something to compare it to since the AIA’s power rankings were released for the first time this season on Monday.

The coaches poll has a top five of Mountain Pointe, Brophy, Pinnacle, Desert Vista and Hamilton as does the AIA rankings albeit a different order in Brophy, Hamilton, Pinnacle, Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista.

So, the coaches and the MaxPreps/AIA logarithm are essentially on the same page through the top seven as Mesa and Red Mountain are the next two teams in both polls.

The Broncos beat Mountain Pointe to start the year, but Mountain Pointe beat the previous No. 1 Desert Vista in a great overtime game between rivals last week.

The flip-flopping at the top might be the situation all year, according to one coach.

“I believe that the top five teams are starting to separate from the rest of the 6A field,” he said. “This year is proving to have some degree of parity at the top.  Desert Vista suffered a close overtime loss to Mountain Point and MP has earned their place as one of the top teams.

“Mountain Pointe is good as advertised. Desert Vista finds a way to beat themselves as they are their toughest opponent. Pinnacle is still not at 100 percent because of injuries and Brophy looks like a team that will compete for the championship.”

Locally, three area teams remain in the top 10 as Mesa, Red Mountain and Mountain View make up the sixth through eighth spots in the poll.

Here is the third coaches poll of the season:
