Mesa-based 88.7FM Wrench Nation Car Talk Radio Show and East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) announced the winner of their Female Automotive Technician Scholarship: Julia Lopez-Ocano.
The Maricopa resident is a mother of two daughters, ages 4 and 10, and is currently a lifeguard. She just turned 29 on Aug. 7, her first day of school at EVIT towards her new career.
Lopez-Ocano said she has been interested in a career in the automotive industry since she was 16 years old when her father bought her a truck and told her she needed to learn how to change the oil, tires, spark plugs, if she was going to have it last.
Having some experience working on her own vehicles showed the judges that she knows it’s not an easy profession. Lopez-Ocano said she is “beyond excited” to receive this scholarship and was telling her father that she had lost all hope for a career she has passion for. He told her this was a gift from above.
Becoming an auto mechanic is more involved due to the technology used in today’s vehicles. There can be up to 150 million lines of code in a single vehicle. So, training is critical and EVIT’s automotive center is well equipped with the tools to teach these students.
