Franklin at Brimhall Elementary School in the Mesa Public Schools District was named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School, for overall excellence, by the U.S. Department of Education.
Principal Jeff Abrams and Patti Karr, sixth-grade teacher, will accept the award at a Blue Ribbon awards ceremony Nov. 6-7 in Washington, D.C.
“This award highlights the conscientious efforts teachers make on a daily basis to ensure that all of the students achieve their personal best,” Abrams said. “The commitment from students, parents and staff united as a team working toward academic excellence, in addition to the development of well-rounded individuals in the areas of citizenship, respect and responsibility, has made this recognition possible.”
Franklin at Brimhall was one of five schools in Arizona that received the award out of 342 schools across the country.
“National Blue Ribbon Schools are active demonstrations of preparing every child for a bright future,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. “You are visionaries, innovators and leaders. You have much to teach us: some of you personalize student learning, others engage parents and communities in the work and life of your local schools and still others develop strong and forward-thinking leaders from among your teaching staff.”
Blue Ribbon awards recognize the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming school environments where students master challenging and engaging content.
Franklin at Brimhall is one of four Franklin elementary schools in the district. The traditional, back-to-basics academic model was created in 1978 and also includes Franklin Junior High. Using the Spalding Method, an accelerated math program and a direct instruction model, Franklin students are provided an advanced, fast-paced curriculum.
“The National Blue Ribbon award is the culmination of multiple years of positive, impactful working relationships amongst all stakeholders within the Franklin program,” Abrams said. “The focus of an ongoing growth mindset empowers each and every student to reach their potential and beyond. It is with pride that we accept this prestigious recognition with the knowledge that it guides our efforts in attaining greater success.”
