Deonce Elliott started the game with a kickoff return for a touchdown and Desert Ridge never let up to beat Corona del Sol 34-14 on Friday in Central Region action.

The Jaguars ran only two offensive plays in the first quarter after fumbling on its first play from scrimmage, but led 14-0 after Cooper Schmidt connected with Caden Bethel on the first play of the second drive for a 60-yard touchdown pass.

The win pushed Desert Ridge to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Central to set up Thursday’s matchup at No. 1 Mountain Pointe, which has an identical record.

A couple of field goals made it 20-7 and then Matt Purnell connected with Ethan Winfield for a 27-7 lead and Elliott closed out the Aztecs (1-6, 0-2) with a 1-yard touchdown run.

“We couldn’t get out of our own at times,” Desert Ridge coach Jeremy Hathcock said via text. “We have a long way to go.”
