Girls basketball coaches poll: Gilbert pushes past West Side duo

The Gilbert girls basketball team finally broke the double team.

The Tigers have been well represented in the 6A girls basketball coaches poll, but were unable to get past the West Valley combo of Valley Vista and Millennium through the first four weeks.

That changed in the first poll of the new year.

Gilbert moved to the top spot with Valley Vista falling out of No. 1 for the first time, down to second, with Millennium third.

“They’ve beat some good teams at Nike (TOC in mid-December) and look really strong,” one coach said. “(Brynn) Wade (a transfer from New Mexico) has been the inside presence they needed.”

The Tigers won 13 in row through Tuesday’s action after losing two straight – 5A Mesquite and Valley Vista – in early November, and have beaten every Arizona team they’ve faced by at least 20 points during the streak.

Valley Vista was probably dinged for a tough showing at the Nike TOC where it lost three times against top competition.

Locally, Red Mountain continues to be the only team to receive votes as the Mountain Lions dropped from No. 6 to No. 8 after losing to No. 4 Xavier on their home court.
