Infant death investigation in Mesa

Mesa Police

Detective Nik Rasheta, a spokesperson with the Mesa Police Department, said that on July 29, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Phoenix police received a call reporting a child not breathing at the Free Church of God, 2766 E. Marguerite in Phoenix. Upon their arrival, the child was pronounced deceased at the scene, he said. The child was identified as 1-year-old Jasiah Riggins.

Rasheta said earlier in the day Jasiah’s father had dropped off his wife and his other child at the church where it was determined he and Jasiah would return to Mesa for a nap. A few hours later, Jasiah’s father received a call to come pick up the family at the church and as he was arriving, noticed Jasiah had been left in the vehicle and was unresponsive, Rasheta said. Once the incident location was determined to be in Mesa, the investigation was handed over to Mesa police, he said.

“The investigation is ongoing and initial observations point toward a tragic accident,” Rasheta said.
