Mayor John Giles will make a cameo appearance in the 2:30 p.m. production of “Footloose” this Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Mesa Arts Center.
He will play the high school principal in the Mesa Encore Theatre production.
“I’m kind of nervous and I hope the critics don’t kill me,” Giles said.
Suze St. John, board treasurer for Mesa Encore Theatre and director of “Footloose,” said she often likes to get guests to make cameos at plays because it brings in people to the audience who may not necessarily come to watch a production.
“The mayor and I went to high school together and we did plays together, although he may not admit that,” she laughed. “I think it’s just wonderful (that Giles agreed to perform). I like the things he does. He’s a very fun mayor.”
The ‘80s “Footloose” is the story of a Chicago teenager who moves to a small farming town from where rock music and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace.
The production runs Thursday through Sunday until Sept. 25 at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St. Get your tickets at www.mesaencoretheatre.com.
