Mesa Community College (MCC) assistant football coach Benjamin McIvor, 44, died of injuries he sustained from a fight outside a Phoenix bar last weekend.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of coach Ben McIvor,” said John Mulhern, director of athletics at Mesa Community College. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this most difficult time. Coach McIvor was well respected by his colleagues and our student athletes and will certainly be missed.”
According to the Phoenix Police Department, McIvor was involved in an altercation with a 47-year-old man outside Padre Murphy’s, a sports bar near 44th Avenue and Bell Road at about 10 p.m. on July 29. Police said McIvor fell and hit his head on the ground during the fight and was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Phoenix police said the other man involved in the fight left the scene but later was contacted by them and has been cooperative. He was not identified by police, who said the investigation is ongoing.
McIvor was the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator for the MCC football team. The 2017 season was his third at MCC and 20th coaching overall. He was also a teacher at Glendale High School and was the head coach for the track program.
He was married and has three children.
