A strong third round helped propel the Mesa Community College’s men’s golf team to a sixth-place finish among 11 top NJCAA teams at the High Country Shootout played at The Links at Sierra Blanca G.C. last week.

Mesa Community College shot a 285 after going 291-290 in the opening two rounds for a two-over- par 866 total.

Leading the way for the T-Birds was Jeff Kelley with a four-under-par 73-73- 67—212 which placed him tied for 11th. Dean Harpe and Jake Guess both tied for 31st. Harpe fired a 75-74- 69—218 and Guess carded a 73-71-74—218. Mesa’s fourth scorer was Zane Smith with a 73-72- 75—220, tying him for 38th place.

“We played enough good golf to win the High Country Shootout, however, we need to learn to minimize our mistakes as a team,” Coach John Guerrero said about placing sixth. “We will adjust and be ready for the Cal State San Marcos tournament next month.”

MCC will wrap up its fall season at the Colorado State-Mesa Fall Invite Oct. 23-25.
