The Mesa Transportation Department hosted its 11th annual Regional School Crossing Guard Training Workshop at the Mesa Convention Center on Aug. 2. The training is part of a regional effort by Maricopa Association of Governments to improve the safety at school crossings for both crossing guards and students. School crossing guards from the East Valley cities of Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert and school districts throughout Maricopa County were in attendance today.

Today’s workshop included a presentation from Mesa’s Fire and Medical Department on the health and welfare of crossing guards. (Submitted photo)

With school starting next Wednesday, Aug. 10, in the Mesa Public Schools, education and training to all school crossing guards in the region is an essential step to ensure that both the guards and the children in their care stay safe, said Amy McConnell, transportation and energy public information officer for the city of Mesa.
