Mesa Police Department awarded 6 highway safety grants

The Mesa Police Department (MPD) Traffic Section was formally awarded four Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) grants for fiscal year 2018. The following grants will support MPD’s commitment to DUI enforcement and promoting safe roadways. The MPD received the following grant awards for fiscal year 2018:

  • DUI Abatement Grant Program: $100,000
    -Support police personnel services overtime
    -DUI task force events
    -Employee related expenses to DUI enforcement
  • DUI Enforcement Overtime: $170,000
    -Continuous DUI enforcement
    -Major holiday task force
    -DUI enforcement related to patrol district projects
  • Traffic Enforcement Overtime: $86,500
    -Back to School enforcement
    -Speed enforcement
  • Accident Investigation Training: $8,678
    -Collision reconstruction training courses
  • Accident Investigation Related Materials and Supplies: $10,687
    -Desktop computers/monitors for Traffic Reconstruction Detectives

The Mesa Police Department (MPD) Crime Lab was formally awarded one Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) grant for fiscal year 2018. The following grant will also support MPD’s commitment to DUI enforcement and promoting safe roadways. The MPD Crime Lab received the following grant award for fiscal year 2018:

  • Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (50 percent funded): $142,500
    Equipment used to screen DUI blood samples for intoxicating substances

GOHS is fundamental in the progress, direction and advancement in public safety programs throughout the state of Arizona. To accomplish set goals, GOHS awards grant funding to various law enforcement agencies, including fire departments and non-profit organizations. GOHS plays a critical role in maintaining safe roadways for its citizens.
