Alphabet is pausing its expansion plans for Google Fiber high-speed internet — and that means Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale won’t be getting the highly sought-after service.

Fiber teams are being hit with layoffs, according to Ars Technica, as Google keeps the service running in cities where it’s already launched, and refocuses on high-speed wireless internet in other cities.

Google Fiber is already live in Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah; and North Carolina’s Triangle. Commitments in remain in place in Huntsville, Ala.; Irvine, Calif.; San Antonio, Texas; and Louisville, Ky.

Some cities, including Tempe, had faced legal challenges by existing ISPs over their potential participation.

Besides the Valley, other cities left out in the cold by the shift in priorities include Chicago; Dallas; Los Angeles; San Diego; Oklahoma City; Portland, Ore.; Jacksonville and Tampa, Fla.; and San Jose, Calif.

At best, your Fiber dreams are on hold — at worst, they’re all but dead.
