Mesa Public Library with THINKspot, has formed a partnership with Fremont Junior High School, Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Mesa Engineering Department and Arizona State University’s Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers to bring a cardboard boat regatta to Mesa this weekend.

The regatta will be on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fremont Aquatic Complex, 1101 N. Power Road. This is a free event and the public is encouraged to attend. Races will begin at noon.

“We had such a great turnout last year,” Mesa Librarian Melissa McCallister said. “Last year our students were creative with their designs and applied the tools they learned from STEAM Club. We will be working with volunteers from the city of Mesa Engineering Department and ASU’s American Society of Civil Engineers to guide construction of the boats.”

The race will be a competition between seventh- and eighth-grade students involved with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Club at Fremont Junior High. Students will demonstrate their understanding of scientific principles, like density and buoyancy, all while having a fun, friendly, battle of the boats.

An awards ceremony will follow the races for First Place, Team Spirit, Aesthetics, and the Titanic Award (for the team whose boat sinks the fastest). It’s all in good fun.
