Sugarlips Cakery ‘kisses boring cakes goodbye’ with quality service, unique flavors

When people walk into Sugarlips Cakery, they enter a sweet slice of heaven, filled with flavorful cakes, cupcakes and other desserts.

Since opening in 2006 and moving to their current location in Mesa in 2014, the cakery has created a reputation for itself as a dessert staple for custom cakes and cupcakes that deliver on quality and flavor.

“The thing that I love about bakeries is the different specialties you can get into…first and foremost we’re a cake shop,” said Sugarlips Cakery owner Melodie Macaulay. “We’re really focused on the artwork here and the wow factor.”

She said if people have a special occasion, “when it really matters, and you really want to impress your guests and want to say something special, then that’s what we’re here for.”

The name Sugarlips, Macaulay said originated when her oldest daughter was an infant, her sister would call her Sugarlips. Nobody quite knows who said it first, but Macaulay said they thought that would be a good name for the bakery someday.

“As soon as someone brought that to light, it was like ‘Yes, that will be the name,’ and we just knew it all along and so that’s what it is.”

The cakery offers six most commonly asked for flavors everyday including triple chocolate, vanilla, rainbow sprinkle and red velvet, and three of what Macaulay calls ‘wildcard’ flavors for about a week that are seasonal or special flavors, such as Girl Scout cookies including Samoas, Thin Mints and Do-Si-Dos from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3.

For those who love cupcakes, Sugarlips has your version of heaven—they have a cupcake happy hour twice a week, where cupcakes are $1.50 each (no limit) on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 2 p.m.

“I think what makes us really special is that we’re really focused on special occasion cake and we have really great artists and that’s what we love doing, making it look awesome,” Macaulay said.

The cakery creates custom cakes for special occasions including parties, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers and more, in addition to creating custom wedding cakes.

Sugarlips has a unique storefront as well that is as inviting as it is quaint with an asymmetrical layout with glass windows, allowing those passing by to see the charming decorated business, complete with a wedding nook for consultations. In addition, the plaza where the cakery is located is a great hub for wedding planning, as the Villa Tuscana Reception Hall is next door, while La Bella Bridal Boutique and Dance FX where first dance lessons for weddings are taught.

“This is a great spot in my opinion in Mesa because it’s far west Mesa,” Macaulay said of Sugarlips Cakery’s location. “For being East Valley, we’re really centrally located because we have super easy access to Phoenix and downtown…so it’s really well located within Mesa.”

Part of their success stems from their customers that keep coming back to Sugarlips for a taste of their flavorful cakes made to order for special occasions.

“Our customers are the best, and almost everything we sell ends up at a party, so you can’t beat that for advertising,” Macaulay said. “We love social media for getting the word out to younger generations…if we’ve got an event we get it out on Facebook, so it’s really nice to have that.”

Christine Krueger, owner of Cuisine with Chef Christine, LLC in Gilbert, has been a repeat customer of Sugarlips for eight years since a friend introduced her to the cakery.

Krueger has ordered an array of items including wedding and birthday cakes, baby shower cakes and cupcakes to complement events for her clients.

“Their cakes and cupcakes are always festive, moist and delicious. They are fabulous to work with and exceed expectations in design and décor,” she said.

Krueger said what keeps her coming back to Sugarlips is Melodie, who is a friend and a great baker, and her cake needs are always taken care of.

It can be difficult to choose a bakery given the vast amount of choices, Krueger said she would recommend people purchase Sugarlips’ goods and try them because “From their quality of service, to their excellence in baking I continue to purchase my cakes and cupcakes from them and will continue to recommend them to my clients and family and friends.”

Macaulay said for the future of Sugarlips, she hopes they continue to grow. They currently participate in charity-type work that helps them contribute to the community and people come back, which Macaulay said has been rewarding.

“The other rewarding thing is seeing that my staff loves their job, they love to come in everyday and have a happy place to work, and also seeing happy faces when the cake comes out and it’s what they wanted, and they’re so happy,” Macaulay continued.

“I always think of it like people aren’t just buying a cake, it’s like a manifestation of the joy they’re feeling when they’re celebrating their child’s first birthday or when they’re getting married—it’s not just a cake, it’s this thing that symbolizes this fabulous event in their life.

There are tears of joy in here sometimes when they see this manifestation of their love for this person they’re celebrating and that’s pretty incredible.”
