The Waste Management Open has a distinct Mesa flair to it in 2018.

Three Mesa Public School District graduates are in the field for the annual PGA event at TPC Scottsdale when it gets underway Thursday as Charlie Beljan (Red Mountain), Jesse Mueller (Red Mountain) and Chez Reavie (Dobson) tee off with hopes of being in contention over the weekend.

Beljan, 33, is in the event on a medical exemption and needs to start playing well in order to upgrade his playing status for the rest of the 2018 season.

He missed the cut in his only other event after offseason surgery.

Mueller earned an exemption to the PGA Tour’s 2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open by winning the 60th PING Southwest PGA Championship.

He is the GCU Golf Course’s PGA director of golf and Lopes men’s golf volunteer assistant.

Reavie, 36, is the 93 ranked player in the world entering the event and has made the cut in all seven events so far this season.

He tees off first on Thursday at 8:50 a.m. on the first tee, while Beljan (12:56 p.m.) and Mueller (1:05 p.m.) start on No. 10.

MyNewsMesa.com will be out at the event this week with coverage, starting Friday.
