Weekend rewind: Red Mountain girls, Desert Ridge’s Beyers win titles

The Red Mountain girls golf team took first place at the Tempe Invitational at Ken McDonald Golf Course on Saturday, while Desert Ridge’s Brooke Beyer won medalist honors at 2-under par.

The Mountain Lions shot a combined 21-over par to best Desert Vista (34 over) and Desert Ridge (41 over) was third, while Westwood (plus 124) was sixth.

Red Mountain was led by Belle Balkan, who finished in a tie for fourth at 3-over, while teammate Sydney Bryan was seventh at 5-over.

Teammates Kendall McBean (6-over), Nicole Ewing (7-over) and Meghan Singh (9-over) finished eighth through 11th place.

Beyer won by one stroke over Highland’s Lorel Hayward. The Jaguars’ Kaitlynn Criswell (9 over) and Rianna Garland (15 over) finished tied for 11th and 15th place, respectively.

Westwood was led by Emilia Yoon as she finished 19th at 19-over par.

Cross country

Two area squads competed in the Ojo Rojo meet at Tumbleweed Park.

The Desert Ridge girls were led by Caitlin O’Dell and Alexis Lopez as they finished 43rd and 44th in the team race with times of 21:58.40 and 21:59.60, respectively.

The Dobson girls didn’t enter as a team but were led by Susan Sallad and Brooke Stratman as they finished 72nd and 87th with times of 22:50.90 and 23:26.60.

The Mustang boys had two top 20 finishers in Scott Sally (16:29.50) in 13th and Claudio Garcia (16:57.70) at 19th.

The Jaguars boys weren’t as successful as Alexander Witthus led the way at 17:27.00 to finish 53rd and Justin Kenney (18:11.70) was the only other competitor inside the top 100 at 91st.

The initial power rankings were released on Friday with no area teams in place for a top eight seed in the Division I standings.

Red Mountain was the highest area team at No. 9 with a 5-4 record, while Skyline was 11th at 4-3 and Mountain View was 12th at 4-3 for what would be the final spot in the 12-team tournament if the season was over now.

Desert Ridge (4-4) was next at 17 with Dobson (4-3) at 18, Westwood (4-4) at 20 and Mesa (1-6) at 22.

The team state tournament is just over a month away as it begins on Oct. 23. The individual tourney begins on Oct. 21.
