Simply put: Wins needed to secure a postseason spot

It’s time to dig deep and grind out every win possible otherwise there won’t play any more games left to play.

That’s the right; the regular season is already winding down for the winter sports.

The basketball and soccer seasons are down to the final weeks of action before the “play-in” round where teams that fall in the ninth through 24th spots in the power rankings face-off to join the top eight teams that secure a postseason spot.

It’s why when two teams like the Mesa and Mountain View boys basketball teams met up on Friday the winner – the Jackrabbits – took a huge step toward securing one of those final eight spots.

“We got five games left; this was huge,” Mesa coach Shane Burcar said Friday night. “You screw up one game and you are in trouble. If you don’t get this 50/50 game, then you probably end up on the road in the first round. It’s everything.”

Here is a look at where area teams stand heading into Tuesday’s action:

6A boys basketball

Play-in round is Feb. 9 with first round on Feb. 14

In: Red Mountain at No. 5; Mesa at No. 6.

Play in: Mountain View at No. 10; Skyline at No. 18; Dobson at No. 24.

Out: Desert Ridge at No. 31; Westwood at No 33.

6A girls basketball

Play-in round is Feb. 8 with first round on Feb. 13

In: Red Mountain at No. 6.

Play in: Dobson at No. 17; Westwood at No. 23; Skyline at No. 24.

Out: Desert Ridge at No. 26; Mesa at No. 34; Mountain View at No. 36.

6A boys soccer

Play-in round is Jan. 25 with first-round on Jan. 31

In: None

Play-in: Mesa at No. 20.

Out: Red Mountain at No. 27; Skyline at No. 28; Desert Ridge at No. 29; Westwood at No. 33; Mountain View at No. 34; Dobson at No. 39.

6A girls soccer

Play-in round is Jan. 25 with first-round on Jan. 30

In: None

Play-in: Desert Ridge at No. 17; Red Mountain at No. 18; Mountain View at No. 19.

Out: Dobson at No. 30; Westwood at No. 31; Mesa at No. 36; Skyline at No. 39.
